Botanical Information

The evergreen tree from which ylang ylang oil is extracted belongs to the custard-apple family, Annonaceae. Native to northern Australia and tropical parts of Asia, it features a slender trunk, even-textured bark, and smooth, shiny, oval pointed leaves having irregular margins. Average height of the tree is around forty feet. Its scented blooms resemble a sea star with six narrow, drooping petals that start off as delicate greenish-yellow but changes to a deep yellow to yellow brown color as the tree matures. These flowers bear greenish-black colored fruits that hang in clusters from the ends of the stalks. It is from the exotic-smelling blooms of the plant that ylang ylang oil is distilled.
