Sandarac

Sandarac is an aromatic resin that comes from the coniferous Tetraclinis articulata tree of the Cupressaceae family. This evergreen Sandaractrees are native to the Atlas mountainous regions of the North African country of Morocco. Sandarac was notably popular in the Italian Renaissance-era for its use in varnishes and oil paintings. This gum resin possess a rattling warm, light, fruity, balsamic, frankincense-like fragrance and has a long history for use as an incense as well as in aromatic therapies for relaxing, strengthening the psyche and inducing sleep.

Origin

The Tetraclinis articulata, or the Sandarac tree, is the only species in the genus Tetraclinis of the Cupressaceae family. Although these trees are endemic to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, a sparse population is also found in Algeria and Tunisia, Malta and near Cartagena in southeast Spain. The Sandarac trees are small trees and their height normally vary from 8-15 meters. They have broad, scaly leaves arranged in opposite decussate pairs. The sap is obtained by tapping and sun dried. The hard resin appears as small, irregular, roundish oblong grains or tears, of a pale yellow color or sometimes inclining to brown. They are more or less transparent, dry and are brittle. The Sandarak tree is the national tree of Malta.
