Even today the mastic gum and mastic incense sticks are used to please god and for various other purpose. The fragrance of mastic gum incense sticks works well for concentration and meditation apart from healing some ailmetns as well. Mastic, or Chios as it is more commonly known, is an aromatic resin obtained from the Pistacia lentiscus tree found traditionally in the Greek island of Chios, Aegean sea. This exquisitely scented gum or raisin is procured from the bark of these bushy shrubs. Known also as "Chios Tears" in their native language, this semi-translucent resin appears as pastel yellow or faint green at its best. There is another type, which occurs in a milky white color but is considered to be inferior in quality. It has a long history as a mouth freshening chewing gum, which can easily be comprehended from its name, and comes from the English word masticate which means to "gnash the teeth".

Plant Description and Cultivation:

The Pistacia lentiscus or the Mastic tree is a dioecious, evergreen shrub and belongs to the Pistacio genus. These densely branched trees grow as tall as 13 feet and are found throughout the Mediterranean region, from Morocco and Iberian peninsula in the west through southern France and Turkey to Iraq and Iran in the east. They have paripinnate leaves and bears red berries in closely packed clusters, which turn black on ripening. The resin is obtained by tapping the trees and collecting the sap in barrels which are later dried and cleaned. The harvesting season is from June to September and it is believed that younger trees yield better resins. A tree bears about hundred "hurts" and yields about 4-5 kilos of mastic over the season.
