Frankincense

frankincense Frankincense is an aromatic resin obtained from various trees of the family Boswellia, which grow abundantly along the coastal areas of Saudia Arabia, Oman, Yemon, Ethiopia and Kenya. Once the trees are 8-9 years old, the trunks are slashed and the exuded resin is allowed to harden in the desert sun. It should be noted that there are a variety of trees under the genus Boswellia and each yield a different type of resin. The more opaque the resin the richer is the quality. The tree is tapped 2 to 3 times a year, the final tap being the best harvest due to the higher content of terpene, sesquiterpene and diterpene. This resin is then used to produce incense, incense sticks, frankincense oil, and other frankincense incense products which are highly demanded in every corner of the world.

This aromatic frankincense resin comes in quite a lot of varieties and their quality is rated depending on their color, shape, aroma and age. Color and clump size play a major role in determining the resin value, the lighter the color and larger the clump, the more valuable the resin becomes. The two best types of commercially available frankincense are believed to be Silver and Hojari.

The value of frankincense can be cogitated from the story of the three "wisest man" who travelled great distance to present unto the "son of God", this miraculous fragrance. Valued more than gold in ancient times, frankincense was considered to be a gift fit only for Kings and Gods. This intoxicating fragrance has been used to levitate mood and for its medicinal properties since the 1500 B.C.

"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him." - Matthew 2:1.

"And when they came into the house , they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. " - Matthew 2:11.
