Cypress Incense



Cypress Incense Sticks Cypress incense and Cypress incense sticks do not need any introduction because of their popularity across the world, because of their unique fragrance and other aromatherapy properties. The Cypress incense and cypress incense sticks are made from the essential oil extracted from the wood of Cypress trees. Cypress refers to any of numerous evergreen, coniferous trees belonging to the family Cupressaceae and are found to grow abundantly in the northern temperate regions. Cypress trees are known to live for a very long time, the oldest being the Sarv-e-Abarkooh in Iran's Yazd Province, whose age is believed to be more than 4000 years. Apart from pleasant fragrance, the Cypress incense are also have antimicrobial properties because Cypress contains natural antimicrobial substance known as "phytoncide" which are widely used in aromatherapy to relax and treat some deseases worldwide.

These coniferous generally trees grow anywhere from forty to seventy feet but there exist some species which can grow as tall as even 150 feet. They have fibrous barks that shreds very well and scaly leaves
which grow in rows. The leaves appear to have a dull yellowish color on the top and pale bluish green color below. The most important part of the cypress tree is the wood, which is hard, finely grained and has a resinous fragrant. The reddish brown colored wood is very durable and a sought after source of lumber due to its water resistant properties. Cypress trees prefer damp, swampy areas and are known to grow very slowly.

Types of Cypress Trees:

A few important species of Cypress has been discussed below which are used to make incense, incense sticks and other incense products. Each kind of such incence have unique properties and fragrances.

African Cypress (Widdringtonia species)

African cypress are tall shrubs which grow upto 20 feet and have scaly leaves which are arranged in opposite pairs in four rows, along the sprig . Although the adult tree has scale like trees, the seedling exhibit needle like leaves which are arranged in a spiralmanner. There are four species of the African Cypress namely,
  • Clanwilliam Cypress (Widdringtonia cedarbergensis) : Native to Cederberg Mountains
  • Mountain Cypress (Widdringtonia nodiflora) : Found in the southern Malawi south to Western Cape Province.
  • Willowmore Cypress (Widdringtonia schwarzii) : Endemic, Baviaanskloof and Kouga Mountains (west of Port Elizabeth) and Eastern Cape Province.
  • Mulanje Cypress (Widdringtonia whytei) : Endemic, Mulanje Massif, Malawi.

Bald, Pond, and Montezuma Cypresses (Taxodium species)

These are very large trees often growing to a height of 150 feet and occur mainly in the southern part of the North America. Strangely, the Taxodium species appear to be deciduous in the south and semi-evergreen to evergreen in the north. The heartwood of this trees are rot and termite resistant due to the presence of a sesquiterpene called cypressene, which is a natural preservative.

Chinese Swamp Cypress (Glyptostrobus pensilis)

This small genus of the cypress family is native to the subtropical southeastern parts of China and in northern Vietnam. These deciduous trees grow up to 100 feet in height and have scaly leaves arranged in a spiral manner. Chinese Swamp Cypress is highly valued for its decay resistant, scented wood and is nearly extinct due to exploitative harvesting.

Cordilleran Cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis)

Cordilleran Cypress originate from the Valdivian temperate rain forests of Chile and Argentina and is also found to occur in the evergreen forests of the Andes Mountain. These are slow growing trees like most cypress and grows from 10-12 meter in height.

Fujian Cypress (Fokienia hodginsii)

Found mainly in the southern part of China and some parts of Vietnam and aos, Fujian Cypress is a prized genus of the cypress family because of precious fragrant timbers. These evergreen trees grows upto 30 meters in height and requires mild climate and abundant rainfall. The timber is used to make art works, furniture and charcoal of very high heat value. The oil is extracted by distilling the roots and is usedin end number of applications in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical field.
