Cestrum Nocturnum

Cestrum Nocturnum Cestrum nocturnum is commonly known as night blooming jasmine, night jessamine or night-blooming cestrum, which is a speciesof Cestrum, evergreen woody shrub growing to 4 meters tall. It is probably the strongest fragrance among all flowers and becomes very strong, almost at the point of intoxication in the evening. Many people think the plant only emits fragrance in night but it also smell a light scent in the day. It has a poisonous white berry and some plants have a variety of yellowish flowers. The shrub has glossy and smooth leaves, which are 10-20 cm long and the stem can reach up to a height of 4ft. It blooms periodically throughout warm weather.

Cultivation And Uses

Cestrum nocturnum is principally cultivated in subtropical regions such as subtropical America and West Indies. It is best cultivated in average to moist soil, which is light and sandy with a basic pH of 6.6 to 7.5.

The plant has a psychoactive effects but the mechanism is still unknown. Ingestion of the plant is unknown but it is reported to have problems of respiration and feverish symptoms. People who suffer from respiratory sensitivities or asthma - report difficulty breathing, irritation of the nose and throat, headache, nausea or other symptoms when exposed to the blossom's powerful scent. Some plant guides say jessamine as "toxic" and causes temperature rising, rapid pulse, excessive salivation and gastritis.

Cestrum nocturnum best cultivates in light and sandy soil. It is affected by salt but adaptable to different conditions and tolerate most the weather conditions. For best cultivation, night blooming jessamine should be grown in full to filtered sun. Ittolerates light shade, but blooms well in full sun. It can be affected by waterlogged soil but best bloom in average to moist soil. The plant cannot tolerate freezing temperature, but it again germinate in spring. It propagates fast by using stem cutting.

Usage

The plant mainly grows in warm climate landscapes. It is a free standing specimen, attractive and unpretentious. It generally blooms in the evening and makes itself noticed by its strong scent, which is often intoxicating. The smell is overpowering and almost shrouds the whole atmosphere with its fragrance.
